"Vinyl Berlin" acknowledges and implements the expanding infrastructure of the global community. This image shows a version of the Berlin skyline, incorporating architectural landmarks that are unique to the city: The Funk Tower, Gedächtniskirche, Palast der Republik, Reichstagsgebäude, Sony Center, Berliner Dom, und the Fernsehturm. The composite skyline is constructed of transparent vinyl, sewn with fishing line. An airpump is mounted on the wall. It pumps air through a network of vinyl tubing, branching in a family-tree pattern. The tubes puncture the vinyl-Berlin skyline at eleven white plastic ports. The piece was created for an exhibit at Tansport Gallery in Los Angeles, California. It hung in LA rotated roughly 135 degrees clockwise, making Vinyl-Berlin parallel to Actual-Berlin, 3/8 of the way around the earth. |
