An
image of bare branches against the sky is projected on a translucent
plate of plexi-glass. A small fan and transformer are built in below
the projector to prevent over-heating. The ends of ten lengths of
fiber optic cable protrude through the translucent projection screen,
capturing some of the light from the projection. The cables run through
six slices of a log, maintaining an oval formation. The log slices
are held together by two aluminum rods that pierce each slice. Two
transparent plexi-glass plates extend from these aluminum rods down
into a transparent thin-walled plastic basin. This basin is partially
filled with water.

Three
vessles are perched atop the log slices, their contours curving to match
the curvature of the log. These three vessels are filled with soil.
Nylon rope runs from the soil down into the water in the basin, drawing
water up to the soil through capillary action. The moisture in the soil
allows green grass to grow. The ten fiber optic cables carrying the
portions of the slide projection of branches emerge from the log slice
opposite the translucent projection screen and loop over the three log-top
grass-growth units. Each cable end feeds into a small translucent piece
of cut plexi-glass suspended above the grass. |
